Yoona mempunya nama asli yang bernama Im Yoon Ah yang berarti anak kecil yang tak berdosa . Aktris ini memiliki golongan darah ber-tipe B. Posisi dalam Girls' Generation atau SNSD adalah sebagai ketua ketiga penari dan visual (face of the group). Yoona memiliki tinggi badan 172 cm di tahun 2013. Cewek jebolan SMA Daeyong ini mengikuti audisi "SM Saturday Open Casting" pada 2002. Di audisi tersebut ia lolos dengan menonjolkan bakat aktingnya. Yoona pun menandatangani kontrak dengan SM Entertainment sebagai peserta training. Setelah training sekitar lima tahun, Yoona debut bersama delapan personil lainnya dalam formasi SNSD pada 2007. Nama Yoona turut melejit seiring dengan populernya SNSD.

Dibanding kebanyakan personil SNSD lain, Yoona lebih menghasilkan karya di bidang akting. Ia memulai karir aktingnya dengan memerankan tokoh pembantu di serial "9 Ends 2 Outs" (2007). Aktingnya yang terbilang cukup baik membawanya sebagai pemeran utama di serial "You Are My Destiny" (2008). Tokoh Jang Sae Byuk yang diperankannya di serial tersebut sukses membuatnya memenangkan lima penghargaan sekaligus, diantaranya "Aktris Pendatang Baru Terbaik" KBS Drama Awards 2008 dan "Nitizen Popularity Award" di ajang Korean Drama Festival 2008.

Yoona didaulat sebagai model di beberapa video klip, antara lain di single "Marry U" (2006) milik Super Junior dan "Replay - Japanesse Version" (2011) milik SHINee. Ia juga terpilih sebagai salah satu ikon yang menyanyikan soundtrack taman rekreasi air terkenal di Korea, Caribbean Bay. Dipasangkan dengan Taecyeon 2PM, Yoona menyanyikan lagu "Cabi Song" (2010) bersama Kwon Yuri, Seohyun, Nichkhun dan Chansung.

Cewek yang menggemari olahraga bowling ini juga muncul di reality show. Beberapa reality show yang menjadikannya bintang tamu tetap adalah "Girls' Generation's Hello Baby" (2009), "Family Outing Season 2" (2010) dan "SNSD and Dangerous Boys" (2012). • Widely known as the “center” image of SNSD thanks to her immense popularity among Korean public. Age-wise, she’s also placed in the “center” of SNSD; Seohyun (born in 1991) is a year younger than Yoona (born in 1990) and the other 7 members are one year older and considered as same-age friends (born in 1989 and Sooyoung in early 199o).
• The physically strongest member of SNSD, gained her a nickname Him Yoona (strong Yoona).
• Despite her sweet girlish image, Yoona is actually boyish. One of her well-known nickname is Im-choding (elementary-school boy Im).
• Being the the second youngest of SNSD doesn’t stop her to be one of their biggest prankster.
